Sedit Angelus

Jacob Handl (1550-1591)

Original Text

English Translation

Original Text

Sedit angelus ad sepulcrum Domini
stola claritatis coopertus.
Videntes eum mulieres,
nimio terrore perterritae astiterunt a longe.
Tunc locutus est angelus et dixit eis:
Nolite metuere,
dico vobis, quia ille
quem quaeritis mortuum iam vivit
et vita hominum cum eo surrexit.
Alleluia.

English Translation

An angel sat at the tomb of the lord
dressed in a shining robe.
Seeing him, the women
terrified stood off at a distance.
Then the angel spoke and said to them,
Do not be afraid,
I say to you, because the one
whom you seek dead is already alive,
and human life has risen with him.
Alleluia!

This piece was performed by the SFBC in Jacob Handl: Opus Musicum III on May 14, 2005.
