Original Text

Omnes gentes plaudite manibus,
jubilate Deo in voce exultationis.
Quoniam Dominus excelsus,
terribilis Rex magnus super omnem terram.
Subjecit populos nobis et gentes
sub pedibus nostris.
Elegit nos hereditatem suam,
speciem Jacob, quam dilexit.
Ascendit Deus in jubilo
et Dominus in voce tubæ.
Psallite Regi nostro, psallite,
quoniam Rex omnis terræ Deus,
psallite sapienter.
Regnavit Deus super gentes,
Deus sedet, sedet super sedem sanctam suam,
principes populorum congregati sunt
cum Deo Abraham,
quoniam Dii fortes terræ
vehementer elevati sunt.

English Translation

O clap your hands, all ye people;
shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
For the Lord most high is to be dreaded;
the great King over all the earth.
He brings the people under our dominion,
he puts the nations under our feet.
For us he chooses our heritage—
the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.
God is gone up with a shout,
the Lord rises with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
God is the King of all the earth;
sing praises with understanding.
God reigns over the people;
God sits upon the throne of holiness;
the princes of the people gather together
with the God of Abraham,
for the shields of the earth belong to God;
he is greatly exalted.

This piece was performed by the SFBC in Early Masters of the German Baroque on October 26, 1996.
