Du sollt Gott deinen Herren lieben, BWV 77

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Original Text

Original Text

1. Chorus
Du sollt Gott deinen Herren lieben
von ganzem Herzen, von ganzer Seele,
von allen Kräften und von ganzem Gemüte,
und deinen Nächsten als dich selbst.

2. Bass Recitative

3. Soprano Aria
Mein Gott, ich liebe dich von Herzen,
mein ganzes Leben hangt dir an.
Laß mich doch dein Gebot erkennen
und in Liebe so entbrennen,
daß ich dich ewig lieben kann.

4. Tenor Recitative
Gib mir dabei, mein Gott, ein Samariterherz,
daß ich zugleich den Nächsten liebe
und mich bei seinem Schmerz
auch über ihn betrübe,
damit ich nicht bei ihm vorübergeh
und ihn in seiner Not nicht lasse.
Gib, daß ich Eigenliebe hasse,
so wirst du mir dereinst das Freudenleben
nach meinem Wunsch, jedoch aus Gnaden geben.

5. Alto Aria
Ach, es bleibt in meiner Liebe
lauter Unvollkommenheit!
Hab ich oftmals gleich den Willen,
was Gott saget, zu erfüllen,
fehlt mir’s doch an Möglichkeit.

6. Chorus
Herr, durch den Glauben wohn in mir;
laß ihn sich immer stärken,
daß er sei fruchtbar für und für
und reich in guten Werken,
daß er sei tätig durch die Lieb,
mit Freuden und Geduld sich üb,
dem Nächsten fort zu dienen.

English Translation

You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, with all your soul,
with all your strength and all your mind,
and your neighbor as yourself.

That’s the way it is:
God wants the heart for himself alone.
One must with all one’s soul
choose the Lord and what he desires,
and no more find pleasure
except he ignite the mind
with his spirit,
for only then are we fully assured
of his grace and goodness.

My God, I love you with all my heart,
my whole life attaches to you.
Let me then understand your command
and be so aroused in love
that I can love you forever.

Give me as well, my God, a Samaritan’s heart,
that I may both love my neighbor
and for him feel distress
at his pain,
that I not pass him by
nor abandon him in his need.
Make me hate love of self,
so that one day you will give me
the joyous life that is my wish—but by grace.

Alas, there is so much still
that is imperfect in my love!
Though I often have the will
to complete at once what God says,
yet I lack the capacity.

Lord, through faith dwell in me;
let my faith grow ever stronger,
that it may evermore be fruitful
and rich in good works,
that it act through love,
practice joy and patience,
always to serve my neighbor.
