Les canuts lyonnais se sont révoltés plusieurs fois au cours du XIXe siècle contre leurs conditions de vie. En 1831, ils prirent même pendant quelques jours le contrôle de la ville. Néanmoins, plus d'un lyonnais sera surpris d'apprendre que cette chanson est l'œuvre du célèbre chansonnier montmartrois Aristide Bruant (1851-1925).

Several times in the 19th century, the "canuts", the silk-workers of Lyon, rose against exploitation and hard living. In 1831, they controlled the whole town for a few days. Anyway, this song was made at the turn of the century by A. Bruant, a famous Parisian song-maker. It says: "we weave golden clothes for the priests and still have no shirts, we weave cloaks and scarves for the ruling ones and still are buried without a sheet. Our reign wil l begin when yours ends. Hear the roar of revolt. Nevermore shall we go naked." - With thanks to Philippe Pierson for the English and French commentary.
