PIET VERDRIET
(Loose copy 1): Nr.14 in this book. PIET VERDRIET (ENG. PIET VERDRIET - PETER SORROW) I.D, du Plessis

English translation

This is a humorous Malay poem by I.D, du Plessis, that I set to music for soloist and SA (or SATB).

"I sing a song of Piet Verdriet (a melancholic persons' name and surname)
Oh, what a joke and a half!
His legs are thin as whistling reeds
He brushes his shoes with red beetroot leaves
He puts his tie in a yellow wooden drawer.
His breakfast consists of snails and salad.
He went in search of a girl friend (nonnattjie)
- and while jumping over a bush, he lost his trousers.
This girl friend said: " this must be the New Look! "
He says: "If ever I go and call on a girl again, I will buy me leather trousers so that a girl won't laugh at me again! "
"Adam, kielie kielie " etc. is just jolly nonsence words.
