Engl. Transl.: Brahms  FEST- UND GEDENKSPRÜCHE
für 8-stg gemischten Chor, Op.109, 1-3

1. Our father trusted in thee:
they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
They cried unto thee, and were delivered:
they trusted in thee,
and were not confounded.
The Lord will give strength
unto his people;
the Lord will bless his people with peace.
(Psalms: 22/6, 29/11)

2. When a strong man armed
keepeth his palace,
his goods are in peace.
But: Every kingdom divided against itself
is brought to desolation;
and a house divided
against a house falleth.
(Luke 11,22/17b)

3. For what nation is there so great,
who hath God so nigh unto them,
as the Lord our God is in all things
that we call him for?
Only take heed to thyself,
and keep thy soul diligently,
lest thou forget the things
which thine eyes have see,
and lest they depart from thy heart
all the days of your life:
but teach them, thy sons,
and thy sons' sons, Amen.
(5. Moses 4,7,9)
