Data about the life of the work: "And Loud We Sing and Long!" is a totally unified piece, but it mixes several quite different ideas and elements. It is a "classical" carol for Christmas in its musical style and could well appear in traditional programs for Services of Lessons and Carols. The text (written by the composer) describes in graceful English the birth of Christ in traditional terms with references to the angels, the wise men, the star and Mary. However, it also includes scat syllables and its Southern Hemisphere origin is betrayed by its mention of Christmas at summer. The music in four parts is easy to sing and would suit performances by church, high school, college and community groups at Christmas. This is a wonderful, fresh addition to the Christmas repertory: "the buoyant time of year" as the text of this carol describes it.
