Unser Herr Jesus Christus in der Nacht,
da er verraten ward, SWV 495

Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)

Original Text

English Translation

Unser Herr Jesus Christus
in meinem Blut,
das für euch vergossen wird,
zur Vergebung der Sünden.
Solch’s tut, so oft ihr’s trinkt,
zu meinem Gedächtnis.

Our Lord Jesus Christ
in the nigh in which he was betrayed
took bread, gave thanks, broke it,
and gave it to His disciples and said:
Take, eat; this is my body,
which is given for you.
This is done in remembrance of me.
In the same manner
He took the cup after supper,
gave thanks, gave it to them and said:
Take and drink all of it.
This cup is the New Testament
in my blood,
given for you
for the forgiveness of sins.
This is done, whenever you drink it,
in remembrance of me.

This piece was performed by the SFBC in Death and Transformation: Bach, Biber, and Handel on February 20, 1999.
