Franz Gruber (1787-1863)

The Austrian composer Franz Gruber was Kantor and organist at St. Nicholas’s, Oberndorf, Upper Austria, when he wrote the famous Christmas song “Stille Nacht” on Josef Mohr’s text. Mohr was the assistant priest who requested Gruber to compose the piece, first heard on December 24, 1818, when an organ breakdown necessitated changes in the music for the service.
