|: Pour chanter "Veni Creator"|
Il faut avoir chasuble d'or. :|
Nous en tissons pour vous, grands de l'Eglise,
Et nous, pauvres canuts, n'avons pas de chemise.
C'est nous les canuts,
Nous sommes tout nus!
2. |: Pour gouverner, il faut avoir
3. |: Mais votre règne finira
Several times in the 19th century, the "canuts", the silk-workers of Lyon, rose against exploitation and hard living. In 1831, they controlled the whole town for a few days. Anyway, this song was made at the turn of the century by A. Bruant, a famous Parisian song-maker. It says: "we weave golden clothes for the priests and still have no shirts, we weave cloaks and scarves for the ruling ones and still are buried without a sheet. Our reign will begin when yours ends. Hear the roar of revolt. Nevermore shall we go naked." - With thanks to Philippe Pierson for the English and French commentary.
